NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day Twenty-Five

Today I’m down to the Y poets; William Butler Yeats and Marguerite V. Young.
Yeats poems I decided to read were
A Song From ‘The Player Queen’” and “Brown Penny”.
Marguerite V. Young’s poems were
Awakening” and “Ballad-Loving”.
She is yet another poet that’s new to me. I have read poems by Yeats prior.  Actually never a big fan of his; but that’s just my opinion.  I enjoyed the poems by Young and will keep her on my list to reread again.  We need rain here in my area.  Today, like yesterday, we are having some much needed rain.  It’s not the rain I dislike but lightning and thunder.  The reflection of my three line thought for the day.  Today I decided to try my hand at limericks.  The one came to me the other evening; then I remembered my friend’s husband likes to fish so I wrote the funny piece about him fishing. The sherry one I just thought funny.

DISCLAIMER:  NONE OF MY LIMERICKS ARE THE TRUTH

Okay we settled that now.  Today is RED HAT SOCIETY DAY.  A few weeks ago I mentioned in a blog the poem that inspired this group. When I first moved to Florida I had been asked if I were interested in becoming member in my gated community’s Red Hat Society.  I inquired what they did and if there was a charity they supported. I found out all these woman did was go out once a month to eat and shop or some other activity. I graciously said thank you for asking me to join but no thank you.  First I’d have had to purchase outfits to wear plus hat.  Secondly if I wanted to go out to eat I’d do so when I wanted.  I do own a few red hats but it has nothing to do with this group. I am sure it’s a fine organization for someone, just not for me.  My poem today was inspired by the society and about a group of women I noticed one day when I was out for late afternoon lunch.  The six or so women were having fun and laughed as they had their wines.  I noticed they had cups of coffee also then they began to tally up the check.  I found out from the bartender that this was a monthly event for them. I had fun with composing this piece as I looked up different shades of both red and purple.  Actually two colors I’d never wear together in my younger days.
Until tomorrow....enjoy your day.  Find a few limericks to read.

Day 25....THREE LINE THOUGHT

A rainy day....but we need rain
  Flowers are thirsty....grass looks parched
I just dislike thunder and lightning

                    For Terry
There once was a lady named Terry
Living alone on the wilderness prairie
One day she did think
“Tonight I will drink
By myself this bottle of sherry”

                For Fran
There once was a woman named Fran
Who drank her beer from a can
Her neighbors recycle bin
Her empties went in
As her’s was filled to the rim

               For Tom
A man from Bartow went fishing
But soon his wife he was missing
When he got home, a surprise
Could not believe his own eyes
Found his friend and his wife hugging and kissing

Today I am wearing my hat of red
      with the dark plum flowers
 my tie-dyed purple gauze dress
vermillion shade flip flops to show off
         my toes polished violet
Amethyst jewelry and I’ll carry a lipstick
          red purse
Purple and red....red and purple
a combination I’d never wear in my
            thirties
 But........
     they blend together now
I’m heading out for the day
meeting the girls for an afternoon of
    food....
       wine....
             gossip....
                      wine....
                               gossip....
                                       wine....
Coffee....
           cheesecake....
                     coffee....
Why not! I earned this right!
Paid my dues as they say
Once a month we get together
Just us girls....ladies of a certain age
Laughing....crying....crying....laughing
Nobody pays us no mind
Six women all decked out in various hues
       of red and purple
Red hats on our head
 Drinking wine....drinking wine....drinking wine
Drinking coffee before tallying up the check....calculating the tip for good service
Before I leave the house I check myself out
        in the mirror
Looking good for an older broad
I only hope no one else has on the same
      outfit today
