SUMMER’S HERE....July 5th

I miss baseball.  I enjoy watching the games, yelling at the umpire and following my team(s).  I follow three actually; two from the state where I lived prior to moving to central Florida and the local team in Florida.  The watching of baseball became part of my routine about ten years ago. I’ve always followed my teams, but if I can watch a game on the television I’ll do so. It’s a lot of fun watching it at one of the clubs where I hold membership.  Of course my yelling at the umpire makes some people chuckle but it’s all in the fun.  I’m not certain when and if there will be a season even if it’s only sixty games.
As I think about July being the first full month of summer, I at times think about summers as a child.  After chores in the morning and lunch, it was outdoor play time.  I would bike ride to the park or walk as it was only five block away. Swinging on swings, sliding down the sliding board or teeter-tottering with a friend it was all fun.  There are days we’d (my step-brother) and I would get a group together for a ball game. My favorite memory was watching a fireworks display. I remember the Good Humor Man in his pristine white truck coming down our street at night.  We’d have our change ready for one of his many treats.  I always tried something new; never the same thing twice. I think that kids today are missing out on the fun my generation had during the summer.  Now when I see kids and how they spend summer it makes me sigh. Back then, you made up games; ran and had fun not sit in front of a screen playing video games.
Last night the fireworks began around 8pm and continued until 1am.  We also had rain but that did not stop people from continuing to make noise all night.  I only hope it does not continue tonight. It’s Sunday and I hope you all have a blessed one.
Until tomorrow....it’s National Graham Cracker Day, so enjoy either dunking a few in a cold glass of milk or have a s’mores or two.

  July 5th....DAILY REFLECTIONS

The fireworks began at 8pm....the last one I
heard going off was 1am....silence was
            golden....able to finally drift
                   off into Dreamsville

These fireworks people in my neighborhood
were diehards for sure....the rain did not
stop them from what they considered
their job to keep everyone awake
till all hours of the night

I hope tonight it’ll be quiet....the 4th is over
no need to continue shooting off
                   fireworks

Jeers and cheers....boos and hurrahs....as I
        watch my baseball team play

Updates if and when there will be a season I
await....I miss the boys of summer

Little did I realize watching baseball
has become part of my summer
                          routine

Yelling at the umpire from my seat at the
            bar part of the fun

            MEMORIES of SUMMER
              © Scottie-ann Murphy

I think about my childhood
and games I played all summer
Kids today don’t know what
they’re missing, that is such a bummer

Kick the can taking turns moving it
    down the street
 Best when wearing tennis shoes
not in flip flops or bare feet

Riding bikes to the park or
to a friends house to play
Getting a group together for
a game of ball all day

When darkness comes getting jars
     to catch the fireflies
Hoping to keep them alive inside
   but always they would die

Waiting each evening for the Good Humor
Man to come in our neighborhood
Unable to decide what to buy each night
as all his treats were good

Childhood memories of summer fun
come to my mind each fourth of July
My favorite is of the firework displays
that light up the dark night skies

Kids today don’t know the fun
of the summers of days gone by
When I see what they’re now doing
I hang my head and sigh
