HOLIDAY WORD of THE DAY.....GARLAND
This is another short read again. It’s been a very busy few days and seems things won’t let up till the weekend.
First a Happy first day of HANUKKAH to those who celebrate this holiday.
Secondly a happy 76th birthday to the veterans organization the AMVETS. The AMVETS post where I belong is having a memorial service today for all those members who had passed away since March. As it’s the organizations birthday I am donating a sheet cake I ordered for the lunch afterwards. It’s a birthday cake for the birthday.
Today I focused my pieces on garland and decking the halls. I defined garland as a decoration that can be made of various materials. It’s not just tinsel looking but can be beaded with snowflakes hanging down like a few strands I did own once. My personal favorite is garland that resembles evergreen trees. That’s what looks best on banisters and around items on the walls. I think stringing popcorn or cranberries would be a fun family night. No doubt a lot of popcorn would be needed; eating it while stringing it. I recall in second grade we made paper chain garland. I remember mine was red and green; most of my classmates did one single color; a few did multiple colors. It looked very nice on the small tree in the apartment where I lived with my mother. I’ve always felt that garland seems to bring it together. The reason I mentioned it goes on the tree almost last is because many hang icicle tinsel and of course the finishing touch to any Christmas tree are the candy canes.
I’ve always thought of having a patriotic Christmas tree. Last year my VFW had a tree just in patriotic colors.
The spreading cheer today is leave a happy note for someone to find. A few years ago, when I first started doing this, I left a whimsical Christmas card on the counter near the sink I the ladies room of a Legion I was visiting. Inside the card was a little snowman ornament. On the envelope I put “who sees this it’s for you”. The following year I left a holiday cartoon I printed off. No matter what you leave, it’s all in fun.
Today I including a little story about watching the army-navy game which by the way will be this coming Saturday.
We’ve had fun watching the game over the years.
Have a good day.
Until Friday.... have fun leaving the happy note and as always Stay Safe.

One year we were in Philadelphia area doing a bit of Christmas shopping. Actually we drove over the state line to a mall in Delaware where we found some good purchases. We had lunch before headed back home. We stopped at an American Legion post outside of Philadelphia. Jimmy had been there many times when he worked and stayed in the area. It was the day of the Army-Navy game. The post he told, me had a high percent of navy veterans . There was a nice crowd and it seemed everyone had come
to watch the game. We showed our membership cards and found two seats at the bar in front of one of the TVs. It was heading into second quarter and army was ahead. As I cheered, a little bit too loud, a customer asked why I was cheering for army. I explained I was an army veteran. He said well why is your husband cheering for navy then. I answered he’s a navy veteran. Hoping that would shut him up so I could concentrate on the game. It seemed he went around telling some of the other customers I was an army veteran. It happened that in the Legion that day were over eighty percent navy veterans. The marine veterans were also cheering for navy; that left a small contingent of us cheering for army. Half-time came and
went. Into the third quarter army was kicking some navy butt. The navy veterans by then were giving me a hard time (all in fun of course). In fact they asked if I’d leave as I was putting a downer on their day with my cheering. Oh they did say Jimmy could stay but for me to leave. This was just all in fun. We hadn’t really planned to stay that long as we were actually headed to have dinner prior to driving the hour and a half home. Every time army made a good play I’d cheer and the guys booed. It was a fun day. In fact I actually did leave when asked to (all for fun). I stayed outside for about ten minutes. No one seemed to inquire why Jimmy was still there since I left. I did go back inside after ten minutes. We left the legion when the fourth quarter started. It was a fun day to watch army who did beat navy that year. Jimmy vowed that next year I’ll be the one crying in my beer when army looses. Yeah right!

TIME TO DECK THE HALLS
Going to finally decorate my tree
And the theme will be Americana
Red, white and blue colors only
Lights will twinkle brightly
All the ornaments will be patriotic
Neatly draped garland will hug the branches
Decking the halls begins today

DEFINING GARLAND
Garland goes on almost last
Filling out the bare spots
Giving warmth and texture to the tree
Garland of tinsel in red, green, white, silver, blue and gold shimmer with the lights
Popcorn garland strung by hand a fun Christmas activity
Or cranberry garland that brings color to the tree
Little ones create a paper chain to drape around the branches
While some use fancy lace, ribbon and yarn
The garland that resembles tree branches my favorite for the stairway
A holiday decoration that brings everything together
