Holiday Word of the Day.....POINSETTIA
This is long read today. Sorry but there’s two stories. As I said not all my use of the holiday word of the day will be in form of verse but sometimes a memory from my past Christmas and holidays. That’s the poinsettia story. I laugh when I think about it since I never expected something like this to happen.
The verse I composed came from research I did about the flower itself. How the poinsettia became popular for Christmas. I took the legend well one of few I read and wrote the verse based on it. This was the cutest story I found so I used it.
Today is the Army-Navy football game. My memory of a past event watching the game is included.
I hope you watch the game.
Have a great Saturday.
Until tomorrow....spread cheer today and as always Stay Safe.

My husband is a Navy veteran; I’m an Army veteran. Army-Navy football game day is fun in my house. This is the funniest story.
There was a sports bar/pub called Whistles in Scranton, Pennsylvania. One year my husband, myself and his cousin Johnny went there to have a day out; food and watch the game. My husband and I had each a gray sweatshirt; his with black lettering NAVY and mine ARMY. We took seats at the bar and explained we would run a tab as we were there to watch the Army-Navy game. We ordered food and drink and settled in as the game began.
Unfortunately my husband and I had a bet. Whenever Army scored Jimmy would have to stand and sing “The Caissons Go Rolling Along”. If Navy scored I’d have to stand and sing “Anchors Aweigh”. Well army scored and Jimmy sang; navy scored, I stood and sang. Patrons were looking at us as if we were insane but the bartender explained what was happening. Again navy scored. By then two guys from the local college who were seated at the bar told us they were planning to have a few beers and leave. They said we were making the day fun. They asked about the bet and we explained. The one guy told us his grandfather was a navy veteran.
Now whisk all this is going on around the bar, Johnny got up and announced loudly “I don’t know those people”; he walked away toward the second bar in the pub.
It felt like I just kept singing almost every few moments. In fact the two college guys got up and sang with me.
Everyone seemed to have fun participating in the watching of the game. The owner asked us to return the following year as he said we made watching the game fun for the customers.
As it was Navy won the game. We paid our tab and left. We took Johnny home and we took made our way home.
Did we return the following year? Yes! It was this time just the two of us. Johnny did not want to come along with us. His loss. It was a fun day again.
That was the last time we watched the game at Whistles. That next year we moved to Florida. Mostly we stay home to watch the game now.
So as Army-Navy game is today, go Army beat Navy.

POINSETTIA CHRISTMAS
This is one of my odd memories of Christmas. Now the company I worked for at the time had an in-house group that did fundraising, selling different items during the year. Usually during certain holidays they have plant sales (Easter and Christmas). I had decided to purchase a poinsettia for the house. What I did not know was Jimmy had one sent to me at work for my desk from the florist we used. That year before the one I ordered through the company arrived, the one from my husband arrived. Unfortunately two days later it began to wilt even though I took care of it correctly. I called the florist who delivered it to me. They arrived at my work place with a large white and red poinsettia. They took the wilted one away. A day later, I received a pink one from the florist. No reason except a note to say how sorry they were the first one seemed defective. Now I hardly had room on my desk for the large one, I now had a smaller one. Plus that was the day the one I ordered came. I was surrounded by poinsettias. I was happy that I’d be having the next few days off work; I took all the poinsettias home that evening. I was grateful for help to carry them to my car. The next day I had to pick up items for on the graves as well as pay for the deliveries we had sent to family. We also were picking up the centerpiece I always get for our table for the Christmas Eve dinner. Would you believe I ended up with yet another poinsettia as a gift from the florist. Just a thank you they said. This one was also large and red in color. Now I had to find room somewhere at home for this one. I already had three there. Christmas Eve my step-son arrived at the house for the family dinner. He was always in charge of bringing baked goodies. I must say he outdid himself that year with not only cookies galore but a cake that was out of this world. The cake a two tier sheet cake. In the middle of the layers was Bavarian cream with bananas and strawberries. It was frosted with whip cream icing and decorated in a holiday theme. Let’s just say it was a good thing he had to go boxes stored at our house; he had quite a few requests for take home pieces of cake. But the funniest thing was the family brought a poinsettia for me; another red. It was also large and I had run out of places to place it. To say it was indeed a poinsettia Christmas.
I did try to keep them throughout the year, but I seem to have a gray thumb. I don’t kill all plants so I don’t have a black thumb.
I’m sure you are thinking why didn’t I give any of the poinsettias away. To be honest I had never thought of it. Now when I get one it’s usually just a small size; as it’s only us two.
As today is poinsettia day and that’s the
word of the day, thought I’d share this Christmas memory.

THE POINSETTIA TALE
(Based on research I found)
Pepita was a young Mexican girl
On Christmas Eve night she attended Mass
It seems that this how the story goes
No gift she had to give to the Christ Child
Sad she was not having a present to give “Even the most humblest gift is acceptable”
The girl’s cousin Pedro had said to her
Then Pepita made a bouquet of weeds
It happened when placed at the bottom of
the Nativity
All the weeds then became beautiful red
flowers
