HOLIDAY WORD of THE DAY....St. Nick
Today is St. Nicholas or St. Nick day. I’ve Googled about how and if it’s celebrated. I found it depends on the family. There are treats given to children such as candy, cookies and even small toys. As I think through the years, I’ve only met one individual who did something for her daughter on this day. As I read up about this man, I found he was the inspiration behind Santa Claus, Father Christmas and Kris Kringle. I composed the acrostic with history information; the verse my opinion of course.
Invite a friend for coffee or holiday drink. I know it’s hard during all this COVID-19 stuff going around, but try to find somewhere you can be social distancing and enjoy a get together for an hour. Yesterday I did the phone call and was more than happy to do it. I had a very nice conversation with an old friend. Sometimes you need to speak than text, email or message.
Today is the last part of Hand-me-Down Christmas. Tomorrow I’ll begin a funny three part story of playing Ms.Santa.
It’s the second Sunday of Advent.
Until tomorrow....have a great day and as always Stay Safe.

PART THREE
Did I say size doesn’t matter when it comes to gifts well that’s true. It’s not the size of the box or gift box but the thought behind what you’re giving to that person. The time you spent picking out exactly what you thought they’d enjoy. It seemed that first year my step-siblings did not take any consideration to what they purchased for almost anyone.
I watched their faces as they looked at the small packages from me. Jay opened his and he was quite surprised to find the military vehicles for his army men. He said “oh thanks”. Then Dee opens her gift; she too seemed surprised at receiving the pop it beads. She remarked she was going to make a necklace and bracelet later.
My mother received a babushka from Jay and box of handkerchiefs from Dee.
Grandma Katie say to them that they picked out such practical gifts for their new step-mother; things she could use. What she can’t use mine I wondered. She’d be using mine to dress up her outfit. They both got their father hankies and a pair of socks(hankies from Dee and socks from Jay) as well as the same for Grandfather Anthony. It seemed to me they hardly spent time or money on gifts for anyone so far; it seemed to me they picked up something just to get shopping done but it was odd. After all the time I spent on looking for something special I finished before them. Everyone had opened gifts but Grandma Katie still had hers to open from Dee, Jay and me. I still had Dee and Jay’s to open.
It was time I opened their presents. First one I opened was from Dee, what a shock when I saw what was inside the box. There sitting on tissue paper we’re Dee’s old ice skates that were given to her second hand now given to me as my Christmas gift. She polished them with white shoe polish that seem to cake on the laces and the blades looked rusty. Under them was her old heavy wool red sweater that had been what looked like ripped and repaired on the one sleeve. I just stared at them. My mother and step-father looked surprised as well. I mumbled thanks. Putting everything back in the box then I shoved the box behind me. I then opened Jay’s gift. Again I got another surprise. Inside that box were two sets of Dee’s discarded paper dolls. The paper clothes had some of the tabs taped. I remember seeing Dee play with these dolls during the summer. Now they were mine. Again my mother and step-father had a look of shock.
I mumbled a thanks to Jay and like with Dee’s gift I put it behind me. I sat wondering what did they do with their gift money. If I got used items, my mother, their father and Grandpa Anthony got little things what did they do with it. Well it took no time at all to find that they pulled their money together to get their grandmother a nice gift; a new purse and wallet.
It seemed they thought more of her than their own father or so I thought.
I guess they decided I wasn’t worth the trouble to spend even a dime on me. Hand-me down Christmas or discarded gift Christmas for me but these days you could say they repurposed or recycled.
I only wore the skates twice and same with the sweater. I put the paper dolls in my storage chest where they stayed for years. Dee and Jay never knew how they hurt me; as years went on their presents to me never got any better; as for gifts to them I’d just pick up something but never put thought into it.
I guess that year I felt like Cinderella. I call that Christmas HAND-ME DOWN CHRISTMAS.

Saint Nicholas was a bishop in Asia Minor
The story goes he was rich and gave secret
gifts to the poor
Nicholas because of his kindness was made
a saint
It seems there are many myths and stories
about him
Christmas season he’s celebrated on
December the sixth
Kris Kringle, Santa Claus all are based on St.
Nick

CHANGE the DATE
© Scottie-ann Murphy
St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas or
Santa Claus
What name do we use?
I guess it depends on the individual
Personally I say Santa
no last name for me
I’m sure Mr. Claus doesn’t care
All I know is he brings us gifts
St. Nick should be here today
So where are my gifts? Why isn’t my
stocking filled with goodies?
Santa aka St.Nick should bring us gifts on
December the sixth
Then we can actually celebrate the true
meaning of Christmas Day on December
the twenty-fifth
The Birth of the Christ Child
But big business I guess sees it differently
