DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 31st

It’s the last day of August.  It’s Monday.
It’s the beginning of a new week.
What more can I say.
Yesterday I lost my August 18th blog for some reason. The text disappeared and I had no idea what I wrote.  Besides that I lost seven days of August acrostic pieces I wrote also. I tried to retrieve them as they were on my phone notes app but could not. It saddens me to no end.
Today is my last AUGUST acrostic.  I’m not certain about doing them for September.
With fall coming up, college football is back in swing.  I do not watch professional football but enjoy how the college teams play out their hearts.  With fall also comes pumpkin spice season and of course apple cider season.  I am not a fan of pumpkin spice as much as apple flavored beverages.
Doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy the pumpkin spice though.
I always enjoyed fall with driving to look at the leaves that were changing colors.  Mother Nature’s wonderful painting of trees especially in the Endless Mountain area of Northeast Pennsylvania.
I think I’ll be reflecting a lot about autumn in the coming days.
Until next time....enjoy the last day of August and as always Stay Safe.

Last day of August....another month gone
by the wayside....not sure where the
         month went

It’s another Monday....at least the sun made
      an appearance today unlike
        yesterday....perhaps being sunny won’t
cause the Monday blahs and blues

No specific plans....I’m getting use to doing
things on the spur of the moment these
days....or do nothing and stay inside

August will bid us farewell a fond today

Unbeknownst to anyone yet what
       September will hold

Gridiron college games will soon begin play

Under clear autumn skies fans will huddle in
     the stadium

Saturdays I’ll sit at home to watch my
       favorite college team

Then patiently wait for the following
       Saturday to repeat the process

We bid August a sad farewell....dog days of
       summer gone for another year
Fall will arrive in twenty-two days....cooler
      days and longer nights
Pumpkin spice season begins....coffee,
    beer, cocktails and milkshakes
Crisp apples and apple cider in abundance
Pumpkins, scarecrows, cornucopias
     decorate the home
Friday night high school football
  and Saturday afternoon college football
    games return to the gridiron
We enjoy watching the non-professionals
        play with passion
Leaves on the trees change to brilliant hues
of burgundy, gold, orange and red
Hayrides, haunted houses and corn mazes
provide fun activities to young and old
Indiana Summer arrives with the last few
    warm days of fall
Fall fun, food and football we enjoy until Old
    Man Winter arrives

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 30th

Short reading today.

Sunday has rolled around again.  Tomorrow is the last of the month. Not sure where this month went but it’s gone.  Next month I may not be posting daily but I will see.
Yesterday my AMVETS veteran’s club reopened after the second lockdown.  I’m sure many will be excited to go back out there.  Me, I’ll wait few days before venturing out to the club.  I do need to stop by to catch up with things, but at the moment will wait.
The AUGUST acrostic piece focuses on beach walking as does the verse.  As I’ve said before it’s one of my favorite go to themes.
The narrator in the verse picks up shells but only looking for perfect ones. They also are trying to clear their thoughts on why things happen as they did.
I hope you all have a great day.
Until tomorrow....as always Stay Safe.

      August 30th....DAILY REFLECTIONS

I wake up to the aroma of coffee....so lucky
my hubby gets up before me to get it
     ready....coffee and a lazy morning

Undecided on my daily plans as of this
moment....do I venture out to the now
opened AMVETS....do I wait for few
          days to make an appearance

Sure with the reopening the place will have
    its 50% occupancy....then again who
knows....be nice to see some folks I
haven’t seen since end of June

Alone am as I walk barefoot along the
       sandy shoreline

Unsettled my mind as thoughts swirl in my
       head like a tilt-a-whirl

Gently breeze blowing off the gulf waters
a tad on the chilly side

Unlikely am I to encounter another in the
       pre-dawn hours on the beach

Shortly the sun will rise eventually
       warming the sand and earth

Till then I’ll kept on strolling the coastline
trying to clear the cobwebs in my brain

              © Scottie-ann Murphy

Cobwebs in my head....I am bewildered
Thoughts swirling like a tilt-a-whirl
Round and round....there is no end
Walking along the shoreline hoping to clear
        my head
Trying to comprehend why things
happened as they did....I find no answers
Only more questions marks in my brain
stopping on occasion....I pick up a
            sea shell
Scrutinizing it....decide if it should be added
       to my collection
So far I’ve only collected four....four perfect
       specimens
Five the magic number today....need one
         more before leaving the beach
One shell for every month since you said
       goodbye

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 29th

I reflected when I awoke about bars and clubs still unable to open.  I remembered a few people told me they were glad when the bars opened for the first time, before the second closing, because they needed to have a drink or two. I wondered about that and found there are individuals who do not drink in their homes or can not indulge in drinking at home.  My thought was why not? Don’t these people know where the liquor store is located? In my state one can purchase wine and beer at the grocery store.  Hard liquor spirits along with beer and wine can be found in the liquor stores, that never closed during this pandemic.  Odd I felt as it is really cheaper to purchase from the stores than pay prices at bars and clubs. But then this is my personal opinion.
I think about these individuals being first in line to get into the bar or club as no doubt there will be restrictions on the percent of indoor occupancy.
Thinking about that I believe had to do with my AUGUST acrostic.  I am, I feel, being truthful in this piece.  Once the okay for bars and clubs to open again, of course like before, there will be restrictions; such as occupancy inside, social distancing and perhaps having temperatures taken.  I’ve been to a veterans club that opened recently again; they have guidelines to follow.  One is that patrons temperatures must be taken. It is quite easy these days with a hand held temperature scanner.  There is no touching one person by another; not like old days thermometer in your mouth or even in the ear.  Unfortunately I am sure there will be some individuals causing problems with the guidelines at the clubs/bars.  I also know these places will be monitored to insure they are following the regulations set forth.
My second verse is about the last few weeks of summer from my childhood.  I got the most out of the last few weeks before school resumed.  The thoughts came to my mind for some reason. Think it had to do with the fact kids are returning back to school.  As a kid I wanted to get in as much summer fun those last weeks of August.
Today is Saturday and the beginning of the weekend.  Enjoy your day.
Until tomorrow....as always Stay Safe.

      August 29th....DAILY REFLECTIONS

I wonder about some people....upset they
can’t go out to drink as the bars and
clubs still closed....why can’t they have
            drinks at home

I learned during the first club and bar
closing that there were some people who
said they don’t drink at home or can’t
drink at home....why is that....don’t they
know where the liquor store is located

I can just see those people venturing out
once the places open....bet they will
make sure to be first in line to get inside
          due the requirement capacity....I can
just see it now....sorry we are at 50%
            capacity at the moment....please
you need to wait till someone
                 leaves....this sure is the new
                   normal

All await the reopening of the clubs and
           bars

Unfortunately to date in my state they are
       still closed

Going to be a mad dash once they open
for many individuals to get out to their
          favorite watering hole

Unaware to a few patrons that guidelines
will be in place when this occurs

Some people will complain about the
       regulations and perhaps refuse to
          comply

Then if the business gets a violation for
noncompliance they are the ones to
          blame

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 28th

I had to do an AUGUST acrostic about wearing on Friday.  It was something that popped in my head, the lines etc...as I sat having a few afternoon drinks.  The second AUGUST piece came to me as I thought about having a cherry popsicle.  I always had one when possible as a kid during the summer.  We had what is called mom and pop stores in different neighborhoods in the area where I lived in Chicago.  One area I lived in had a park about five blocks away where I’d ride my bike afternoons during the summer.  I’d meet up with other kids and one the way home I’d purchase a popsicle at the mom and pop store.  Another favorite summer activity was roller skating.   I remember strapping on those old metal skates to my shoes then use the key to tighten them. I tried to get as much fun into the days of August as I knew returning to school not to far behind.
I reflected this morning on it being the last Friday of the month.  Where did the month go?  What did I do?  Like all months since this pandemic began they just roll one into the next.
It’s Friday so enjoy the day; wear your red to remember everyone deployed.
Until tomorrow....try to think about your August days as a kid; and as always Stay Safe.

Last Friday of August....another month
almost gone....what did I do exciting
        these past 28 days

I reflect that I did errands....ate out where
     other people gathered four times....not
        just stopped for take out

I also tried a few new things to eat
      and drink....read quite a bit....did a daily
blog....nothing out of the norm for me

Oh it’s Friday....Day for the wearing of the

Always I wear a red shirt on Friday to
     support our troops

Until they are all safely back home, I will
     continue to don my red

Going out or staying inside, a red shirt is
what I will wear to support our troops

Until they are all safely back home, I will
      continue to don my red

Seems like a small gesture on my part to
show my support to our troops

Till they are all safely back home, I will
       continue to don my red

  Remember
         Everyone

As I have my morning coffee, I reminisce on
   my youth

Under blue skies of August I’d enjoy
      summer afternoons

Going to the park on my bike to enjoy the
monkey bars, teeter totter and swings

Usually stopping at the neighbor store for a
     cherry popsicle before heading home

Skating on the sidewalks, the old metal
roller skates strapped to my shoes

Those carefree days of August enjoyed,
    before heading back to school

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 27th

Short read.

Sometimes the strangest things pop into my head then they disappear when I get distracted.  This happened today. I had something on my mind, then received a text message.  My thoughts just seem to disappear and the text question took over.  Of course it was something I needed to Google.  Actually I was questioned about one of today’s wacky/weird holidays. Since I had no idea about it, I ended up doing a Google search.  The day is ‘The Duchess Who Wasn’t Day’ which is today. I also was curious about it.  I am addicted at times to using Google.  My husband has a habit of asking things about a movie, tv or song at times. I don’t have the answer so I end relying on Google for my answer.
My AUGUST acrostic and verse focuses on yesterday mornings rain.  I did go out after 11:00am when it stopped.  Glad I went then as by the time I returned home it started up again.  I centered the piece around ‘what if’ rain continued all day.  The narrator of the piece would just remain home bound and make plans for the following day.
I hope you all enjoyed yesterday’s escape of Madison.  Not sure what I’ll have her do next.  It will depend on what crazy wacky holiday is coming up next.
Until tomorrow....enjoy your Friday Eve and as always Stay Safe.

I love Googling stuff....I needed to find out
   about a wacky/weird holiday I posted
      today....got my answer in seconds

Google has become a good source for
    many things these days for
       me....especially using a thesaurus or
dictionary....no more looking it up in a
             book

Now if Google can only give me answers to
  like where I left something I can’t find....or
when will our Governor let our veterans
clubs open again....of course my opinion

As I listen to the rain at four o’clock in the
    morning my mind wanders

Unable to fall back to sleep, I think about
    what my day will hold

Going out for lunch was a plan but now not
    certain

Unless by mid-morning if the rain doesn’t
     let up, home I’ll stay

Soup and sandwich day it will be, lazy
    reading day

Tomorrow I’ll try once more to make plans
      venture out for a meal

           © Scottie-ann Murphy

Off and on all morning the rain
Heavy showers at times
  Light showers on occasion
Do I stay home or venture out into world
The rumble of thunder in the distance
A streak of lightning flashing across the sky
Makes me wonder the course I should take
Perhaps staying home would be best
And have myself a lazy day

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 26th

Today I did two acrostic pieces. The first AUGUST centers around the current and ongoing situation of wearing masks. The new normal in our lives. The words and phrases of 2020 will be remembered in years to come as ‘social distancing’, ‘wear your mask’, ‘six feet apart’ ‘sanitizer and wash your hands.’  It is a never ending situation to remember to take the mask when you leave your car to walk into the store.  Now many places are taking temperatures.
The other piece FRANCES is for the birthday of a friend. Describing her is hard.  She’s unique with all her dedication to being part of the American Legion and the honor guard of her post.  She goes out of her way to help those when called upon. As a hugger she’s having difficulty with the social distancing at the moment.
I was challenged to do a flash fiction about today’s wacky holiday.  I decided to use Fran’s birthday as the back round for the gift received.  It was a fun twenty minute piece to compose.  I thought what a twist of  what the gift would be.
It was an early morning for me with being woke up from rain.  I noticed it was foggy outside also.  Watched the sun try to burn off the fog as I had my coffee.  It’s Hump Day already.
Today besides being National Toilet Paper Day it’s also National Cherry Popsicle Day.   So enjoy a cherry popsicle my favorite of the flavors.
Until tomorrow....as always Stay Safe.

     August 26th.....DAILY REFLECTIONS

Watching as the sun comes up to burn off
the fog....glad I don’t have to be out
      driving in it this early

Rain showers woke me at 4:00am....unable
to fall back to sleep....up and about so I
         read the depressing news

It’s going to be a coffee morning
definitely....I also see a nap in my future
           today

Adapting to the ongoing situation to be out
     and about not easy

Unfortunately I am confirming to what one
needs to do when leaving the house

Going out making sure I have a mask,
    has become the new normal

Unacceptable not to wear one in most
     places, I have found

Sanitizer hands, stand six feet apart, social
    distancing

The newest phrases used most often for
     the current year

Fun, fabulous, friendly, faithful are only a
    few words to describe her

Redhead that always has time to help out
     those in need

Always ready with a hugging hello to all she
greets and hugging goodbye when they
           depart

Now and again she may falter, but no one
    individual is perfect

Coffee sees her through the morning,
Scotch helps her cope at night

Effervescent  personality, she bubbles like
      champagne 🍾

So on her special day, it’s HAPPY
     BIRTHDAY to FRANCES

Madison sat up, stretched her arms over her head then plopped back down on the bed.  It was her day; twenty-four hours to do as she pleased.  It was her birthday.  She had taken a few days of vacation from work.  Madison usually celebrated for a week during her birthday.  Her co-workers threw her a brief party the day before.  The cake, white cake with buttercream frosting her favorite had pink roses surrounding the outer rim of the confection.  The gifts were welcomed; she received many gift cards to her favorite places for food and drink. She could hardly wait to have the opportunity to use them.
That evening Austin, the man in her life, made plans to take her out for dinner and drinks.  Her mother had made arrangements to take her to breakfast.  Birthday lunch would be with her friend Sarah.  Madison was excited that her day would be full with family and friends.
Her brother had called to invite her for Wednesday happy hour at the club.  She always considered, Mac, to be cheap.  Her first drink would be free as it was her birthday.  She’d probably only have time for two drinks before Austin would meet her.
She had been wondering what Austin would give her for her birthday.  The thought of not being home if a flower delivery would happen made her pensive.  Perhaps she thought he’d not send flowers.  Delivery of flowers always came to her workplace not home.
Breakfast with her mother was fun; and inexpensive.  It was her birthday; she got a free breakfast at that particular restaurant on her birthday.  Lunch with Sarah had her laughing as she realized the lunch, like the breakfast, would be free since it was her birthday.  Madison chuckled as she finally figured out her family and friends were thrifty.  She hoped Austin would not disappoint and take her to ‘a free meal for the birthday person’ place .  It was then she realized, where they were headed that evening; and yes they gave a free birthday dinner.  Madison now hoped the gift from Austin would make up for the dinner.
It wasn’t until she arrived back home that she received Austin’s gift. He carried the large box wrapped in pink gift paper into her house.  Placing it down on the floor he shouted “Happy Birthday”.
Madison had no idea what to expect as she tore off the paper and opened the box.
Laughing heartily, Austin had taken a cell phone picture of Madison. The stunned look on her face could not say enough.
Again Austin told her “Happy Birthday”, but then said “Happy National Toilet Paper Day. This is your favorite correct, Angel Soft?”
Madison’s birthday came on the same day as a really weird/wacky holiday.

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 25th

Today is a short read.
My AUGUST piece and verse focuses on walking on the beach again.  I see these different images of beach scenes and taking a stroll.  Different reasons why one walks picking up shells.  These images came to mind as I began to wake up yesterday and I got them down before I would forget.  I see the beach, scattered sea shells and a person walking in the early morning.  She collects shells looking for the perfect ones; jagged ones remind her of her broken heart.  I think I may have visualized a beach scene due to last thing I read before falling asleep that night prior.
Today I reflected upon what I need to do today.  I never cared either for Tuesday.  Enough I feel said on the subject.
Hope your day is going well.
Until next time....as always Stay Safe.

Deciding what I need to do
today....I’m wondering if I can put it off
         till tomorrow

Like Mondays I’ve always despised
Tuesday’s....of course all the days just
       mesh as one anymore

Perhaps I’ll begin to think of Tuesday as
   Hump Day Eve....that should work....then
it’s not like Wednesday is holding any
         special plans either

Alone I walk along the beach in the early
       morning

Under a cloudless blue sky I stroll
     nonchalantly

Gathering shells in the plastic pink pail I
      carry

Unfortunately many seem to be
    fragmented today

Sea shells jagged lie upon the sugary white
    sand

Alone I walk on the beach in the early
    morning hours
A pink plastic bucket I carry to gather sea
      shells and glass
Seagulls squawkIng overhead
rumble of waves hitting the shoreline
        the only sounds I hear
Shells lie upon the white sugary sand like
      confetti
Those perfect in appearance
I pick them up for my collection
Others are fragmented and jagged like my
      heart, they are useless

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 24th

Today it’s Monday again.  The last Monday of the month.  What will today be like?   It’s just another day like all of them.  My daily thoughts are on the kids returning to school in my area.  I looked at a news app only to see the bus driver is wearing a mask.  I find driving dangerous wearing a mask as if you wear glasses the glasses can get fogged up from the mask.  Sure they fog up but I only have walking around in store experience of getting foggy glasses not driving.  These kids will be wearing masks all day and I don’t find that a good thing to have it on for any length of time. I feel it needs to be replaced after certain number of hours worn; clean mask put on the face.
Today’s AUGUST acrostic piece and verse is about my neighbors dog.  I enjoy watching him when he is outside.  It is entertaining as he will lay in the grass for short period of time soaking up the sun.  I decided to write about him for some reason.  Maybe because I see him everyday and he’s such a cute little fellow.
I hope you all enjoy your day.
Until next time....as always be safe.

   August 24th.....DAILY THOUGHTS

Another week begins....the last Monday of
August....the dog days of summer will
        soon be over

In my area the kids are heading back to the
classroom....I see on a news app the bus
     driver is masked....will kids be
social distanced on the bus....if so will
they be making more bus runs

Also read on the news app that some
classes will be held outdoors in one
      area....in this heat outdoor classes
especially with a high heat index not a
            good idea....I should stop
reading the news again for awhil

Again this morning I watch my neighbor’s
   dog enjoying the outdoors

Unaware I’m observing him, he gazes
     toward my window

Glad he can’t see me staring at him as he
     scans his surroundings

Up onto the porch he goes, then back onto
     the grass

Soaking up the sun for brief periods,
barking at the cars passing by

Till he goes back into his air conditioned
residence, I’ll keep peering out at him

        (For Barney, my neighbors dog)

The dog does not see me watching him
as I gaze through my window
It’s early morning as he lays in the yard
Soaking up the sun before the weather
    becomes too hot
Intently he watches cars pass by on
       the street
barks at the bicyclists going down towards the lake and the joggers hurrying past his
     domain
His woofing penetrates into my house
Scurrying up on his porch for a brief few moments he laps water
then returns to his spot in the yard
I sip my morning coffee finding I am
   entertained
The dog is more interesting than the news on television

DOG DAYS of SUMMER....August 23rd

Yesterday seemed a dreary day; although it was overcast it was still humid.  Today I see the sun; but later day there are afternoon rain chances. As you look at news in my area, COVID-19 takes a back burner in the news.  The double Gulf hurricanes are front and center.  There are a few jokes regarding this happening this year; but it’s nothing to laugh about.
My AUGUST piece as well as the verse all center on being in a meadow. The narrator takes a walk through a meadow, sits under a tree and writes in their journal.  Instead of enjoying the beauty of nature, they are focused on writing.  This came to me  as I was waking up yesterday.  I think it had to do with something I was reading the day prior.  Sometimes my mind whirls like a tornado with words, fragments and ideas.  I need to get them out of my head and onto paper, into a word document or in my note app.
Today is Sunday and tomorrow is Monday again.  Make the best of today and have a blessed day.
Until tomorrow....as always Stay Safe.

       August 23rd....DAILY THOUGHTS

I see the sun today....yesterday overcast all
day....afternoon chance of rain as always

Again COVID-19 takes a back burner this
   weekend in news....double hurricane in
      the Gulf takes precedent

Thinking about something I read early this
    morning....with a double Hurricane could
Godzilla be far behind....it was sort of
         funny

Against the tree trunk I rest, it shades me
    from the sun

Under Mother Nature’s canopy relaxing with
my journal πŸ“”, I begin to write

Great ideas come at odd moments, need to
get them down on paper immediately

Unaware by what is happening around me
    as I jot my thoughts

Sounds of birds in the tree, sight of
butterflies flittering by, unaffected am I

The words I write my only concern at the
    moment

Carrying a backpack I stroll through the
     meadow
Wildflowers growing here and there make a
     lovely carpet
Butterflies flutter past me
Buzzing bees and tweeting birds I hear
A group of trees stand stately to one side
   sentinels watching over the field
My thoughts whirl through my mind
a tornado of words swirling in a circle
Taking a short break, I walk towards a tree
Opening the backpack remove the old quilt
place it under the oak to sit upon
Grab my journal and favorite pen
the journal blank page a canvass waiting
     for words
I jot the twirling words from the whirlwind
in my head onto the paper
Unaware of the sounds, smells and sights
   surrounding me in the meadow
