JULY JEWELS….Day 4

 

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!  

It’s July 4th; day we celebrate the birthday of our country. We celebrate with parades, fireworks, cookouts and outings.  Many will grill hamburgers and hotdogs; others perhaps chicken, spareribs, sausages and steaks.  To me the cuisine of the day is all about burgers and hot dogs.  Of course there must be ice cream, watermelon and Bing cherries.  This year will be different for me.  I’ll be visiting my husband at rehab so I won’t be going anyplace for burgers or a dog.  Visiting with him is more important than attending any celebrations.  

Again last night people in the neighborhood shot off fireworks until midnight.  Sure tonight people will be doing the same again tonight. Last night we had off and on rain; today we show no chance of rain so they’ll be doing fireworks all night. 

My daily observation from yesterday centered around fireworks being held by different municipalities on the third. I wondered with the rainy weather if they would be canceled last evening. Usually when that happens they have a rain date which would be the fourth. Now what happens when the fireworks are scheduled for the fourth and it rains? Do they postpone them for the year or do they choose another day?

Terry’s old cartoon for yesterday was POPEYE.  A few weeks ago I read about Popeye being inspired by a real individual.  That is funny indeed. As the old Joe Palooka comic had a character inspired by someone I knew.  The character of Little Max was inspired on a person I ended up having as a boss in the mid-seventies.  In fact the original creator of the strip was from the area where I ended up living after I was discharged from the army. 

It is indeed funny how people inspire characters or give writers ideas for their writings. Many have done so for me in one way or another. 

Today our country turns 245 years young.  I wish each of you a happy fourth and a safe fourth.

     tonight….it’s raining out

July 3rd fireworks….can be canceled till

   July 4th

Hopefully tomorrow night will be rain 

  free….and clear skies

  Popeye the sailor was inspired by a 

   laborer and bartender in Chester,     

     Illinois named Frank

Funny a few other residents were the

 inspiration behind characters in the 

   cartoon/comic book series

One never knows where inspiration can 

    be found 

As a child I thought Popeye was 

   created to make sure us kids eat 

       spinach 

Actually I thought (until age nine) ever 

    sailor ate it as part of their daily diet

Of course Popeye never inspired me to

  eat my spinach or enjoy it

Now I wonder about fried clams and

  some baked beans

   Johnson’s 

The other female in our dinner group

  ordered it

It looked very tasty….ordered it the next 

   time I went there 

For dessert I might have a chocolate 

   wafer
