Short reading today
It’s Day 3 of Halloween month. The reason for the short reading is due to the flash fiction I have here today.
My challenge word for the day APPLES. I decided to write about different varieties in the first piece. What can be done with them from just having slices to a caramel apple, making an apple crisp or even cider. There is so many ways to enjoy apples. I must admit as a kid I was fond of candy apples during the fall. The taffy or caramel with nuts around it I always considered too messy. I do enjoy apple salad such as Waldorf salad. It to me is dessert along with the meal.
The second piece was a bit more interesting as I needed to compose a flash fiction piece with using apples and one of the weird holidays of the day. I decided on Frugal Fun Day which is one of the weird holidays today. As you read, you’ll find my favorite character I use on occasion, Madison, is hosting the weekly get together. I thought about the use of apple cider in a punch. I must say the thought of that drink is interesting to say the least. Would be good for an adult party. Now to purchase cider myself and try this punch.
The moon definitely was full last night. It shined so bright I thought my neighbor had on a porch light. Now that I’m up and about it’s overcast out there.
As it’s Saturday and Frugal Fun Day as a wacky/weird holiday, I guess I’ll stay home and find something cheap to entertain me. Since it’s Saturday and fall, college football game sounds good to watch today. Nothing different from any other one for me.
I hope you enjoy the day. Think about apples, the different varieties and how they can be used.
Until tomorrow....enjoy Saturday and as always Stay Safe.

APPLE a DAY

A delicious apple of golden yellow cut into
slices
Perhaps a Granny Smith so green with
caramel and nuts on a stick
Preferably a Gala for making a crisp to
serve warm with vanilla ice cream
Like a tasty good cider from Cortlands to
quench my thirst
Eating or drinking the fruit doesn’t matter to
me
So long as I have an apple a day, as the old
saying goes

FRUGAL NOT CHEAP

Madison loved Halloween. It was one of her favorite holidays, neck in neck with Christmas.
She had been shopping when she began to ponder about what to do for Saturday, it would be the first full weekend of Halloween month.
Picking up the gallon of apple cider, Madison wondered how to fit it into her theme for Saturday evening. This was her week for entertaining her friends for their weekly get together. She decided instead of a game night, after celebrating the wacky weird holiday of the day, she’d have everyone celebrate just the wacky holiday. There were few wacky holidays that appealed to her liking for the day, but she saw one that actually intrigued her. Now how to incorporate the apple cider she put into the shopping cart into the mix. She decided to pick up a bag of Gala apples as well as a liter of ginger ale. The idea popped into her head. She already had the bottle of Fireball so it’d be easy to make the punch. Apple cider, ginger ale and Fireball with apple slices in a punch bowl. She planned to serve pork barbecue sandwiches with Middleswarth chips for dinner and the punch as a beverage. She realized with what was on hand at her house, she could entertain her friends cheaply that evening. All she needed was to ask her mother to make pumpkin roll; Madison had the apples to make an apple crisp. For once Madison could spend less than thirty dollars for the evening. Her mother would provide one dessert for free; her grandmother gave her the some Granny Smith apples only a few days before; and she already had the pork roast in the freezer thanks to a sale the month prior. The bottle of Fireball was in the basket of cheer she had won at the American Legion during the summer. All Madison needed to do was purchase rolls and chips. If her calculations were correct it’d be a cheap evening. After eating the meal she planned on popping corn in the popcorn machine and put on DVD’s. It would be a true frugal fun night to celebrate Frugal Fun Day. Of course she thought maybe there would be a college football game on television to watch before putting on the movies, “House on Haunted Hill” with Vincent Price and “You’ll Find Out” with Boris Karloff. Madison was a fan of the old 40’s, 50’s and 60’s movies. She had quite the collection. The fact she could entertain her friends on a shoe string that evening was true; after all Granny Anna taught her well how to save a penny here and there. Like Granny Anna always said to her, “If it’s free and or cheap it’s for me.”
Madison kept those words in mind whenever she shopped.
Now all she needed was to go to her storage unit for all the Halloween decorations before Saturday. What good is hosting the first friends get together In October if the house wasn’t all decorated for Halloween.
