Today’s FALL/HALLOWEEN word of the day is MUMS. Until recently I did not really appreciate or like these flowers. I have recently discovered their beauty and how versatile they can be in decorating for the fall as well in an autumn bouquet. I composed the acrostic on this fact. I generally have a seasonal flower I like but never really had a fall (September to November) one; now I do. I am surprised at the different shades of the mums with I think bronze and yellow my favorite as they reflect fall colors.
The flash fiction was a timed twenty minute piece to use the word MUM but to also introduce everyone to Madison or at least give a background on her. First I needed everyone to learn more about her as what she does for a living. As time goes on, you’ll find more about her through flash fiction stories.
I can’t believe the days are getting shorter. I felt as if we had no spring or summer. It’s as if we had winter then the first season of COVID-19 then two weeks of summer then the second season of COVID-19 now fall. Of course the weather is still in summer mode for us in Florida. Weather has turned muggy again with the normal afternoon rain showers.
Until tomorrow....enjoy your Tuesday and Day 6 of Halloween; and as always Stay Safe.

MUMS THE WORD

An autumn bouquet consisting of yellow and rust mums, sunflowers, orange roses, other fall flowers and leaves were delivered to Madison at her office. There was no card attached with a greeting or sender name. She starred at the orange cube shaped vase. It was indeed a beautiful arrangement especially since it being October her favorite and her favorite season of the year.
She decided not to let the mystery take up too much of her time at the moment. She was on a deadline to get the fluff piece, as she termed it, done for the papers edition for the following day. The bi-weekly paper came out on Tuesday and Friday; the weekly penny pincher on Wednesday and the website updated daily. The paper also did a ‘Koupon Klipper’ once a month. Madison wore a variety of hats at the family owned business from reporter, photographer, answering phones and selling ads. She loved her job. Her favorite being reporter and photographer.
The fluff piece was usually a story centered on a local business. These stories were written every two weeks. What Madison liked most about doing these stories was purchasing an item or two from the business; paid for out of the papers petty cash fund. Today she wrote up a review of the new Tex-Mex restaurant in her area. She, her boyfriend Austin and her friend Sarah and Sarah’s boyfriend, Sean, all went for happy hour a week prior. The food she found delicious; portion size for the price outstanding. The restaurants homemade salsa came in medium and spicy; chips and salsa was free. The margaritas were wonderful and yes Madison tried them all three ways; on the rocks, straight up and frozen.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she continued typing up the story about Senor Salvatore’s. Madison’s mind could not focus on the mystery flowers until she typed the last word, proofread the story then clicked send to the editor.
Fifteen minutes later she finished typing, stood up from her chair and stretched. As she did she once again eyed the orange vase of flowers. Mums were her autumn flowers of choice; but who sent them and why no card attached.
It will remain a mystery for now, she thought to herself; if anyone inquired all she tell them would be “Mums the word”.
