HALLOWEEN....Day Nineteen

Ready, set, go and complete an acrostic with the words/words for the day; SPOOKY  MOVIES.  As I had my twenty minutes to do this I recall how those old 40’s and 50’s horror/sci-fi/scary movies are my favorite during October.  I need to watch them in the dark with popcorn and a beverage. I thought about how it would make a fun Madison story; yes I was given twenty minutes to come up with something focusing on her too.  I thought as I began typing she’d be doing a movie marathon alone with her cat for company. I needed to come up with why she did this and how all it began.  I recall one year as a kid having been sick around Halloween so I used that for the story.  I needed to think ahead to an ending and it all came together half way through about Austin and a package.  The package idea came from the time my husband and I took a sandwich, bag of chips, cookies and an apple to a co-worker who would not have time for dinner before she had to work the company haunted house fundraiser.  We told her we’d bring her a something for  dinner.  What I did was put it in a shoe box; decorated the box with Halloween stickers I had at the house and tied it with black and orange ribbon.  We called it her boxed dinner (as opposed to box lunch).  She liked the box and did not throw it out. That idea gave me the thought for Madison’s package except it was material Austin used.  I also used a movie that scared me for weeks as the same as one who scares her,  plus I used two other movies I like.  The candy snacks are ones I liked when going to see a movie.  Of course now it’d be either a few of each and not a whole movie size box (which you can find at a dollar store). I’m enjoying my daily word challenges for October but afraid I won’t be doing them come November; so far I’m saying this.
Today is Monday and a new week begins.
Until tomorrow....have a great day and as always Stay Safe.

Sitting in the dimness, electric candles for
     light
Popcorn in a large bowl and drinks next to
           me
On the sofa just me and Sylvia my fluffy
      black cat
Outside it’s a dark and stormy autumn
        evening
Kind of night the thunders roars, lightning
     flashes
Yet I am inside safe from the elements
          outdoors

Marathon spooky movie night arrived again
October thirtieth, always my yearly
        Halloween tradition
Variety of old black and white flicks I watch
It must only be films from the 40’s and 50’s
Even though many I’ve seen time and again
Some still give me nightmares like ‘The
       Crawling Eye’

Madison sat on the couch in the dim lit room.  It was a dark and stormy night.  She pulled the curtains closed so she could not see the flashes of lightning. Thunder roared and at times shook the windows.
It was the night, once a year, she sat alone in the room with only a few electric candles for light.  Her fluffy white cat, Sylvia, sat next to her on the couch.  Sylvia’s green eyes seem to glow in the dimness of the room; she left out a soft meow as Madison clicked play for the movie to begin.  A large bowl of buttered popcorn from her popcorn machine, a large diet soda and a box of JUJYFRUITS® as well as JUNIOR MINTS® within her reach.
Her boyfriend, Austin, had stopped by earlier to say hello.  He knew the movie night was her personal thing as she called it. So he did not stay. Unknown to Madison, he left her a package on the table near the door. It was wrapped in black material with a design of moons, black cats, pumpkins, witches and ghosts. A black ribbon and orange bow tied it together.
Every October Madison would have a marathon of old black and white horror/scary movies (or what she termed them to be).  The movies came from the 1940’s and 1950’s. Many she had watched over and over. Madison did not care if her friends thought her odd for doing this alone every year; she cared less. This all began when she was home sick at the age of eleven.  She could not attend the haunted venue weekend or early kids Halloween party at the Legion.  Her grandmother, a fan of the holiday, came to the house with a stockpile of old movies.  She made popcorn, brought soda and boxes of JUJYFRUITS® and JUNIOR MINTS® for snacking. The following year she and her grandmother did the movie night again.  This tradition kept up until her grandmother started to leave for Florida the beginning of October; now Madison does movie night along, well she has Sylvia for company.
It was her grandmother who introduced her to the movies she now enjoys.
The first movie started. Even though she had seen many of these time and again, Madison still screamed or got a scare at parts in the movie.
A few days prior Austin had been curious on which movies she had planned for this year.  She gave him the run down that she planned.  Two movies she watched every year, “You’ll Find Out” and “House on Haunted Hill”.  The other two movies were in her rotation.  Austin asked her to give him a quick call once the marathon concluded. After the last movie ended; the last gulp of soda slurped, the last kernel of popcorn eaten and the boxes of JUJYFRUITS® and JUNIOR MINTS® empty, did she text Austin instead of call.  He called her back and told her about the gift he left.
She walked over to the table near the door to retrieve the present. Taking a seat back on the couch she opened it.
Madison only had nightmares from a few movies; something she never shared with anyone even her grandmother.
Inside the box was a jar of creepy eye balls (bubblegum) staring back at her and two plush fake spiders.  A note accompanied the package; the note in big bold letters,  ‘AT LEAST THE EYES AREN’T CRAWLING’.  The movie ‘The Crawling Eye’ was one of the movies that always gave her nightmares.
Madison sat staring at the gum balls, as she  plotted her payback.
