Waking up at 2:00am is no fun. I usually look at my Facebook page. This time I remembered I needed to get the wacky holiday list done for today. I laughed when I noticed one for today. Found a cute cartoon that I posted on the bulletin board I’ll post on my page later. Who’d ever think National Chicken Dance Day? Not me! It seems every wedding I’ve been to as an adult played this dance. I know the deejay at my wedding did per request of my husband’s aunt. I’m seriously thinking about going out into my yard to do it today. My poem came from the thought of an old handmade toy chest I saw a few years back at a thrift store. The chest was not for sale as the store was using it for toys. I did try to approach them to let me purchase it but they declined. I decided to put this into the poem today as the main object.
Growing up I had a toy chest but it got lost by the wayside. It held my favorite books and treasures such as a doll I really liked. Hope chests are a thing of the past used up to the 1950’s ( read this on line). I never had one so not sure about them. I do not recall girls in my high school having one. I had a cousin who married in the 50’s era and not sure if she had one either. I thought I’d make this chest in the poem the main focus as it was used by the young girl throughout her life; giving it eventually to her granddaughter. I guess I’m just a romantic at heart. As for the toy soldiers, I had them along with toy Jeep’s and tanks. Today I buy the soldiers once a year and put them in a plastic container with note for people to take one to remember our deployed troops. As for this year, I am unable to do so as being quarantined; our veterans clubs are closed. But maybe I’ll do it for Veterans Day instead of Memorial Day.
Until next time....have a good day. Dance if you must like a chicken.
Day 14....DAILY REFLECTIONS
Ha ha on today’s wacky/weird
holiday....National Chicken Dance Day
Hey maybe I’ll go dance out my yard....I’m
bored....if anyone one sees me who

THE CHEST
© Scottie-ann Murphy
The old wooden chest sits along the attic
wall near the window
The dusty lid beckoning to be wiped clean
No fancy details define the chest....a nice
simple design
standing the test of time....moving from one
home to another over the years....
through floods and hurricanes it stayed
sturdy....keeping its contents safe
and secure
Over the years the trunk held dolls, teddy bear, books, jacks, toy soldiers, tanks and planes....a toy box of a young girl who
sometimes was a Tomboy
As she grew the box hid her diaries and a small transistor radio....love notes and
valentine’s from a special boy
It turned into a hope chest of treasures to
some day be used when she became
a bride
The old dark wooden chest hand crafted with love....constructed by a grandfather for
his granddaughter
Throughout the years the chest held the life
treasures of the young girl....now
woman
Today it holds her cherish memories....
a doll....a few books....the toy soldiers, a
satin Christening gown and the first
diary
Soon they will be tucked into a pink plastic
tote box
The old chest will eventually hold the
treasures in the life of another young girl
yet to be born
