MAY DAYS of FUN....Day Twenty-two

Today’s blog may be a tad long.  First today is National Poppy Day; it’s always the Friday before Memorial Day.  Usually during this weekend many American Legion posts would be out and about with poppy drives; but with the way things are right now that is impossible.  Every year I purchase poppies in May from the Legion.  I will hang them from my purse and tack one on the hat I’m wearing.  Many in the younger generation have no clue about the poppy. Years ago I wrote a piece about when my one grandson found one discarded in the street.  At the time he was five and both my husband and I explained about it to him.  This year the idea of the Poppy Day piece came into my head at one in the morning. I woke up with the information on my mind and typed up the piece. (I did need to research the correct date).  It is sort of a history as well. This morning I downloaded a poppy clip art, printed it off and taped to the outside of my door.  My daily reflections centered around this also. The piece I wrote about the birds came easily as I heard them outside when I woke up. The birdsong for some reason triggered a memory but I think that memory was on top of my memory bank due to a few text messages the other day.  I did not have a happy childhood.  I’m not ashamed to mention this.  I just wanted to be loved by a mother who had me out of wedlock; accepted by her new husband’s family.  I always felt the outsider.  Enough said. So I use to think the birds were lucky to fly away at anytime.  I wrote this piece very quickly as I sat on my bed this morning after prayers and pre-coffee time.  We all have our crosses to bear I guess. I had mine.  Memorial Day weekend begins tomorrow.   It will be different this year for sure.
Until next time....have a good day and as it’s Friday don’t forget to wear your RED to Remember Everyone Deployed.

Day 22.....DAILY REFLECTIONS

Friday before Memorial Day....it’s NATIONAL
POPPY DAY....but this year no poppies to
          be found

It’s such a sad state of affairs with this
Corona Virus....the Legion can not be
           holding their poppy drives

I can always download a clip art picture of a
poppy and print it off....tape it to the
outside of my door....to remember all
              who gave their all

Birds tweeting outside my window in the
      early morn
Their song is Nature’s music to my ear
They sing to me about the sunshine and
a what beautiful Friday it will be
Bird song takes me back to my childhood
when I would go out to play and see the
birds perched high up in the trees
with no cares in the world
They were free to fly away whenever they
wanted to another branch on a different
         tree....no one stopping them from
              taking flight
How I envied their freedom to just leave
I wished at times I was a bird able to flee to
   go  elsewhere.....
           somewhere......
                anyplace......
                 where I could be content
But I was stuck with my two feet on the
        ground
Taking things in stride....wishing to be
    loved....yearning to be appreciated
And looking forward to the day I can fly
       away like the birds

Perhaps many do not know the story
or why it came to be
Our schools....do not they not teach this
             anymore in history class?
Papaveraceae the family name....Papaver
           Rhoeas name given by science
People just don’t understand the
         significance of the flower
Yet everyone must have seen one during
certain times of the year....the POPPY

Day it became the official flower of the
      American Legion, September 27, 1920
A symbol of the sacrifices made by those
who gave their lives for our
                nation....Friday before Memorial
                   Day designated as
                          National Poppy Day
You can remember those who have served
and died by wearing one proudly....the
                   POPPY
