JUST THOUGHTS and SUCH....June 13th

My husband asked me yesterday what todays wacky/weird holidays were.  Prior to asking he decided to give me the words to use in the vignette. He challenged me to use one of today’s holidays along with the words Bartender and Olives in the twenty minute timed writing piece to post today. I thought okay as I began to type quickly using of course abbreviation words that I would later fix.  It was harder than I thought.  I wanted to do a piece about someone drinking gin as today is World Gin day.  Since I had to use bartender and olives I picked World Gin day from the list of wacky holidays of weird holidays for today. I thought yes this would work well with the words from my husband. It took me five minutes to even come with an idea for the vignette.  I used the three olives as I ask for three olives for my Bloody Marys. Why I’m not sure; it could be I read it someplace or saw someone drinking martinis that way with three olives.  I then adopted the three olive garnish for my Bloody Marys.  Years ago at a happy hour on Friday afternoons I met two women in their eighties that had three martinis during the course of the happy hour.  They had three olives in their drinks.  As I toyed with the piece I thought of being in hotel bars during happy hour and what I recall seeing around me for the vignette.  It seemed to come together as I typed but time was being called as I got the last thought done.  Martinis especially gin or plain vodka are not what a woman in her thirties these days drink; so I used the fact she was doing a tribute to a relative who passed away.
Until next time....have a martini 🍸 it’s World Martini day or a glass of Rose wine🍷as it’s National Rose Wine Day.

Nicki received a bizarre look when she placed her drink order.
I’ll have a martini, gin of course; shaken not stirred, straight up, lemon rind and three olives.”
The bartender starred as if Nicki had three heads with horns coming out of two and halo out of the third.  He shrugged his shoulders, “Sure, coming right up’, he said as he placed a bowl of pretzels in front of her.
She picked up a pretzel, took a bite.  It had a tangy dill taste.  Nicki loved pretzels, her favorite snack,  and wondered if she could purchase these or if they were made specially in the kitchen of the hotel for their customers. Looking around the bar area she noticed people enjoying happy hour drinks.  Many were sitting alone, their heads down staring at their phones, tablets and a few had computers propped up on the table.  One woman actually had a book, a hardcover book, she was reading.  Nicki could not remember the last time she had a book in her hands; these days she read ebooks on her Kindle.  She felt it easy to carry her personal library with her.  If she began a book and did not like it, she could close it, pull up another.  She looked over towards the plasma screen in front of her and watched as a news banner scrolled across the bottom of the screen. Same old world problems.  In the background oldies music played from somewhere; music that made her chuckle as it was the same music Aunt Polly always had playing when Nicki went to visit.
She turned to look left.  A man dressed in business casual sat two bar stools away.  Nicki noticed his white long sleeve shirt, no tie and pressed black cargo pants.  He had a bottle of Stella Artois in front of him and what appeared to be some type of whiskey on the rocks.  She took another pretzel from the bowl as she watched the bartender make her martini.  A smile formed on her lips as she noticed him chilling the glass with ice before pouring the drink.
Here you go”, the bartender said as he placed the drink on the cocktail napkin in front of her.
Nicki smiled as she thanked him.
With a sigh, she took an olive from the glass  quickly eating it; then took a sip of the drink.
Here’s to you Aunt Polly.  May you Rest In Peace and enjoy happy hour in the after
life.” Nicki picked up the glass holding it high as she spoke the words.
The man to her left and the bartender looked over towards her watching intently as she took a large gulp of the drink. She then picked out another olive and placed it in her mouth.
Her thoughts turned to her aunt who always made her laugh.  Aunt Polly and her quirky ways taught Nicki that not everything in life had to be serious. Aunt Polly and her three martinis a day with three olives and a lemon rind. Nicki finished her drink and ate the last olive.
Another of the same,” she told the bartender.
The bartender took the glass putting in the area to be washed.  He proceeded to make the second drink.
I’ll only have three of these in Aunt Polly’s memory.” Nicki thought to herself as she fondly remembered her favorite aunt who was buried that morning.
Three martins were her aunt’s limit.  Three olives eaten systematically; one olive before the first sip, one half way through the drink and the final when the drink was finished.
Chuckling to herself Nicki thought about the wacky/weird holidays her friend Scottie posted on her Facebook page that morning.    Today was World Gin day; Aunt Polly loved her gin.
