NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 30

It’s the last day of National Poetry Month.  I looked for what will be celebrated during May. There are quite a few things.  Three I liked was its National Salad Month; National Salas Month and National Photo Month.  Perhaps people will take pictures of their chips and salsa or their salads.  Last year I wrote the following.  Short, simple and yet to the point. Hope you all enjoyed this month filled with rhymes and free verse.
Until next time....enjoy May Day tomorrow and if you have a cat give it a hug; May 1st is hug your cat day.

     Farewell National Poetry Month
All good things come to an end
Another April dedicated to poets and their words gone for another year
Does this mean no one will read poetry for the remainder of the year?
Will Poetry be put on the shelf?
Only a true bard can answer

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH...Day 29

I saw this on social media a while ago. The word ‘FOCUS’ and five words accompanying it.  I thought long and hard about the word and the five words.  It is important to focus on ourselves; on our dreams, goals and what we want most in life.  Focus is what we need to do; pay attention to what we find most important and work towards it.  I sometimes think things seen on social media just trivial information; but on occasion I find something worth while that of which I can relate.  I found this as I said,a while back and wrote my feelings in this piece.
Enjoy today.  Whatever you FOCUS upon don’t give up ever

“FROM SOCIAL MEDIA”

FOCUS........
    FOLLOW
          ONE
                COURSE
                          UNTIL
                                  SUCCESSFUL
A saying I read on social media

One small word giving five words of
     encouragement
We should FOLLOW our dreams no matter
        how unrealistic
Hold fast on that ONE path you take....
       never give up
Do not stray from your path....keep on
        COURSE
Continuously keep striving UNTIL you reach
        your goal
Be victorious....be SUCCESSFUL in all you
        accomplish
FOCUS.....that’s the key word...
FOCUS....FOCUS...FOCUS
Never give in.....never give up

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH.....Day 28

Today I found out I’m the center of some gossip.  Not good gossip, as I’ve never heard good gossip; but rumors about my future.  Well I think if someone knows my future, I only wish they’d give me the winning lottery numbers.  I’ve heard it say gossip is said by fools and accepted by idiots.  Personally I don’t think the people accepting what they are hearing as idiots but uninformed on what is the truth.  Within two days, I have been approached by people telling me the same story they heard.  Someone giving false information or half information about me.  Well if people are talking about me then someone else is being left alone.  This has been upsetting for me and it triggered the following.  Again a verse composed from my life.
Enjoy and always remember if you hear something about a person don’t believe it till you confirmed the truth.

           “RUMORS
            © Scottie-ann Murphy

Ruining other people’s life with gossip
           can be upsetting
  Unfortunately some people have nothing
better to do than wag their tongues
         Mistakable information said about
another can cause grief to them
Of course the gossip spreader feels
they know everything there is to
                      know
                     Rumors are just doubtful
                         truths....uncertain facts
                        Spreading gossip can be the
                          only way some people can
                             be center of attention

Always REMEMBER........
NEVER take everything you hear as
              gospel....
The rumor subject has the nitty-gritty.....
        Confirm before you believe....
             The truth may surprise you

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH...Day 27

This year it seems I’ve become hooked on baseball.  I’m a fan of the Phillies (being from Pennsylvania) and the Rays (as I live in Florida).   I set a sports app up on my cell phone so that I get updates during the games.  It can be annoying but what the heck.  I composed the following I think around time of opening day.
It’s the season baseball begins; hockey and basketball are about to wind down.
Have a nice rest of the day.

                   “PLAY BALL”

       Spring training ends
Boys of summer return to the diamond today
First day of the regular season

Fans flock to stadiums (if fortunate enough)
Or to their favorite sports pubs to watch that first pitch of the season
Hopes high that their team will still be alive in October

The pitcher takes to the mound....
      Winds up....throws the ball
The batter swings....
     "STRIKE" shouts the umpire

Boos echo throughout the stadium

      Pitcher repeats....
         Wind up....throws the ball
Batter swings....whack...ball flies through the air
         HOME RUN
First of the season

Nine innings fans intensely watch the throws, hits, runs, fouls, strikes and errors
A few lucky individuals catch a foul ball

         Hurray my team wins

Game one down
Only a hundred and eighty-one to go.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 26

So today an acquaintance is having a birthday.  He’s a really nice guy and like me a ‘work horse’ for organizations where he belongs.  In fact I personally think he’s an even bigger ‘work horse’ then me.  Not that he’s bigger in stature but he’s a hard worker.  I wanted to cheer him up today and give him a smile so I sent him this piece I wrote years ago. I think I wrote it for either my husband or another male friend having a birthday.  I believe some of the words ring true.  Age is just a number and one is always as old as they feel. I’ve sent this to different people over the years.  Thought I’d use it as the posted poem today in honor of my acquaintance birthday.  He got a chuckle from it.
Enjoy your Friday.

ONLY NUMBERS
©Scottie-ann Murphy

Age is only a number….
Sometimes one digit, sometimes two
And if you are lucky enough three

One can look old and wise
But inside still feel youthful as the years pass
As long as you think, feel and act young
The outside appearance does not matter

You may find a few things harder to do….
But……
That is part of the aging process

Who cares if you are unable to perform all night
It is the quality of the performance that matters

Bedtime at eleven in the evening
No problem….all the good shows end at that time
The news can wait until the next morning
Who wants to fall off into dreamland
hearing another crime has been committed?

More than four drinks make you woozy?
The doctors say more than two are way too many

Wings, pizza and tacos keep you awake
with heartburn or tummy ache?
Solution….
Have then at lunch or before three

You can’t remember where you are going
when you get in the car?
Make a To-Do-List
and
DON’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT IT

So today is another birthday…..
Have a great one…if you can remember how!

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 25

As in the past few days I am posting a piece I composed from my life.   A few of the organizations which I am a member sell Jell-O shots as a fundraiser in their bar area.  I enjoy a well made one on occasion; okay maybe at least three but no more.  The day I composed this piece I had been at one of the places the day before.  They were selling those little pesky Jell-O shots.  My husband got me some in different flavors.  They were properly made or in my opinion.   There is a proper way I’m told to make them; half water and half alcohol.  Making them with all alcohol is not the best thing.  Jell-O shots should be tasty not overpowering in taste.  Unfortunately it was a very warm day and the cold Jell-O shots tasted great on this warm day.  I have made these myself for a fundraiser and found the secret to how they should taste.  Make certain the alcohol has been refrigerated prior to making the shots; at least for me that’s the way I make them; no complaints from anyone.
Enjoy your day....now I think I need to make Jell-O for dessert.

    “MELLOW JELL-O”
© Scottie-ann Murphy

I have heard it said long time ago
'There's always room for Jell-O’

  Yesterday had it for dessert

      Delicious
            Cherry flavored
          A serving of lime
             Then a bit of orange
Cherry definitely my favorite
     Only had a few portions
         No more than eight ounces
Not too much to fill me

    'There's always room for
JELL-O' the saying goes
But afterward I felt a tad woozy
     Don't know why....
Guess I should pass on dessert from here on in
Or at least Jell-O served in
             tiny plastic cups

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH.... Day 24

Last year I composed this piece.  It was my motto’PINK’ when seeking office in an organization which I am member.  The color pink was a reminder that I follow what each letter meant to me.  I won the election; I kept true to my word for what I would do for my year in office.
I took PRIDE in what I did;
Had INTEGRITY in my convictions;
I was a NEVER-ENDING hard worker for the year;
And most of all showed KINDNESS to everyone.
As my year in this position comes to an end I will keep this motto as I go forward.
It’s good to have a catch word that can help you along the way.
Until tomorrow think PINK in your own life

              “PINK”

   Think PINK💗
     Pride
        Integrity
               Never-ending
                           Kindness

               I AM PINK....

I like pink....such a nice girly color
   Makes one think of
      sweetness....cuteness....
        a sugar coated person
Yes at times....I could be
    But......moments....a hardness
          washes upon me....
times I need to stand up
                   for what I believe
Whether right or wrong in the
           eyes of some.....
             steadfast maintaining my
                  position....
                    expressing my
                        viewpoint
Respecting the others opinion
Wearing my suit of armor when
        need be

            I AM PINK.....

I show PRIDE in all I do
     Have INTEGRITY in my
             convictions
        NEVER-ENDING a hard
              worker for a cause or
                         organization
               KINDNESS shown to
                   others always

             I AM PINK....
    I wear the color proudly

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 23

Another piece from my life.  This was written in 2017 after hearing a sing from my youth.  It did bring back the memories I wrote about.  We all seem to think when we are young the current fashion will always be.  The latest trend in hair is a forever thing we think but we learn it’s not so. Everything changes from clothes to hair styles to music.  Think about your own youth and clothes your wore and the music you enjoyed.

“YOUTH FASHION”
©Scottie-ann Murphy

An old song from years gone by plays on the radio
  A melody from my youth
I recall memories of a young female
     Long straight hair....ironed that morning
   Short red skirt.....black top
  Textured hose.....knee high boots
   Miss Fashion Plate?
        Perhaps not....
Ah....but the songs from the mid to late sixties bring back memories of a fashion statement I thought would be forever

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 22

Today is EARTH DAY.  It’s the forty-ninth year of the day.  Can’t believe it’s been that long.  Yet we still don’t seem to get it right.  We are a throw away world.  Seems like we  buy something and instead of fixing it when it breaks we throw it away. I try hard to reuse when I can.  I use a cloth bag for the store. One thing you need to know is that yes your reusable store bags need to be washed now and again.  Recently I attended an event that had throw away cups; I brought my own plastic drinking cup from home to use.  I follow my local recycling plan but sometimes they don’t take everything I feel they should.  I reuse as long as possible plastic jugs for getting water from a water station. I rinse them out in hot water so they can be reused.  Any aluminum cans serve two purposes. I take off the tabs for a group who saves them for a charity; and I give the cans to an acquaintance who takes them for cash.  This person then purchases grocery store gift cards which he gives to the local food bank.  A good deed indeed.  It’s not easy to remember the four R’s (Recycle, Renew, Reuse and Reduce).  This morning I was told that ‘repurpose’ is another thing to do.  I actually think it comes under the reuse heading but it’s a fancier word.
I wrote the following in 2017 when I found I needed to do a better part with keeping our earth clean.  If we all do our part we can help our planet.  It’s everyone’s job to do their part to save the earth.
Until tomorrow have a nice day.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH.....Day 21

It’s Easter Sunday.  Yesterday I said I may not post my poems in the blog today but changed my mind.  I awoke and got my piece for the day complete.  It all came to me as I sat on the bed while my husband prepared breakfast.
After church there’s usually a ham lunch but this year we’re changing things up.  Instead of ham we will have kielbasa with sides of macaroni salad, potato salad and baked beans.  This afternoon I plan to take a plate of summer sausage, plate of kielbasa and two boxes of chocolates to the veteran’s club where I’m a member.  They’re having an Easter lunch for those who have no place to go for the holiday.  It’s a nice thing they do for holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.   Even though I do not generally eat there, I try to take something to put out on the food table.  Those who come for the meal are appreciative to have someplace to go to enjoy the day.
A few years ago I wrote the piece
“Hyacinths”.   It is funny as after I wrote today’s poem I looked back and saw the piece “Hyacinths” back in 2012.  I guess it’s something I find funny how I repeat some things.  I guess too I love having a hyacinth or two in the house even though they trigger my allergies.  It’s one time of year I don’t care my allergies are bothering me.
Enjoy your Easter.

Pink, purple and white blossoms
   will soon bloom
A sweet scent will the house
  with a lovely fragrance
They are yet to open their lovely
buds.... but I patiently wait
Perhaps tomorrow I will awake to
an aroma that is not coffee

The scent of hyacinths filters through the
         air
A sweet perfume greets me as I awake
The coffee aroma not present today
Their fragrance overpowering the frying of
      bacon....the baking of cinnamon rolls
My husband prepares a hearty Easter
       morning breakfast
 The hyacinths full bloom now....
     causing watery eyes....a stuffy nose
my allergies triggered by the lovely plant
Happens every year.....but I can
never resist this flower on Easter Sunday

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 20

At one time I enjoyed karaoke.   It use to be fun going out and being the entertainment; but after awhile it got OLD.  I became bored listening to the same songs being sung over and over by the same people.  It seemed as if some people only knew one or two songs.  It was not fun anymore.  Yes karaoke is suppose to be fun and if you have the nerve to get up in front of a group of people to sing more power to you.  There are many (and I am one) who do not have singing talent but that’s not the point I think. The idea is to have a good time.  Everyone gets their three minutes (average length I figured out for a song) of fame.  They can forget their problems for just a few minutes while fantasying they are Elvis, Frank SinatraMadonna or Patsy Kline.  Karaoke brings a crowd into a bar or club.  There are times a round of singers totals thirty.  Sometimes you’re lucky to get two songs per evening.
As I have not been to a karaoke for over six months I thought about going again sometime soon; maybe not to participate but to listen with hopes I hear new songs from singers.  This thought of karaoke triggered today’s piece.
Enjoy your day.
Tomorrow I may not post my work but that of another poet.

       Three minutes....that’s all they ask
    Three minutes of fame
Three minutes to be the star
Three minutes to sing their hearts out
  Three minutes to entertain
      Three minutes to be Elvis
or Frank or Patsy or Beyoncé
Three minutes in the spotlight
Then back to obscurity until the next round
Karaoke singers......out for a night of fun

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....DAY 19

It’s Good Friday.  I did not really want to put much out in a blog but thought I’d post a piece about Holy Days.
It’s a solemn day for me.  I’m fasting until after 3:00 pm which I’ve done for years.  Breakfast was coffee and a piece of toast.  As I’ve gotten older I use 3:00 pm as my time to have lunch/supper combined which I’ve called ‘lupper’ or sometimes ‘sunch’ depends on my mood.  Today it’s ‘sunch’.
Until tomorrow....have a good day.

Holy Thursday.....
Good Friday....a day of fasting for many
Blessings of the basket at church on Holy Saturday
We all look forward to Easter Sunday
   Our Lenten fast will end
We will don our finest apparel to head
           to church services

Children hunt for hidden eggs
     left by the Easter Bunny
   Easter....it’s not the bunny to
whom we should await and celebrate
Not the basket of chocolate eggs....

Easter Sunday the day to rejoice for the
          Lord has risen

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 18

Today is ‘POEM in YOUR POCKET DAY’.  What you do is download a poem onto a piece of paper; fold it; put in your pocket; then pass it along to another person. Explain to them to read it; place it in their pocket; then they pass it along; with instructions that the new recipient does the same.  It’s fun.  A few years back I made small note cards with poems printed on them.  I passed them out during the day. The following year I created bookmarks which then the person could keep it give away.  This year I’ve printed off a few poems found in the newsletter I received from The Academy of American Poets.  They provided a few that were of interest to me.  On one side I put a poem from the academy; on the other the following of mine.  I wrote this about two years ago for a friend who was having a bad day.  She said it cheered her up.  She kept a copy and refers to it on occasion.   Like her, I pull this one out to give me a chuckle when things seem to be heading in a bad direction.
Enjoy your day.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 17

This is from a few years ago.  It’s a true event.  I had been out doing errands.  I hate traffic and it was just terrible that day.  The road US-27 can be horrible at times.  I think even though it was time most ‘snowbirds’ were leaving; everyone seemed to be out that day.  The road noise was really getting to me and I did put a book on CD to entertain me.  I got quite involved with the story and actually wanted to keep driving around just to listen to it.  This triggered the piece I composed that day.  I’m not sure if others get involved with books on CD or not but I’ve found them great for long trips.
Until tomorrow have a nice day.  Tomorrow is ‘Poem in Your Picket Day’.

    Errands....Tuesday errands
Inside my Honda all is quiet
Only noise I hear comes from outside on the roads
        An eighteen wheeler's squealing brakes
An ambulance siren as it turns toward Florida Hospital
The roar of a motorcycle in the lane next to me
Blaring rap music of the car behind me

   Distractions around me
I need to drown out the street noise
Tunes on the radio....tired of them
     Talk radio....boring today
       News..... too depressing

At my first stop (filling up gas tank) I spot it
   A book on CD
It will entertain me

  The novel thrilling
      Keeps my attention
         Narrator reads well
His voice changing with each new character who speaks

Stop two...the bank...
    Hurrying inside to compete transactions
Need to get back to the story
       Darn....the lines are long
Does everyone have to be here today?
Have to get back to my car

  Continuing my errands listening
     as the plot line thickens

Stop three....post office
     Darn again.....long lines
       It's worse than December

    Stop...go...stop...go
I am hooked on this book
              addicted to it now

    Home again.......
I have to shut down car...go inside...but want to find out what happens next
It's like a soap opera for me

Tomorrow.......I’ll be out and about again
Tomorrow.....I will tune in then

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 16

It was a busy day for me yesterday. I did not get the chance to work on my poem yesterday till later.  I thought about what I had done most of the day.  I drove past the VFW on y way home and my thoughts took me to a recent Saturday I sat there looking out the windows onto the lake. It triggered the following piece I composed late yesterday.  I do enjoy visiting the VFW, sitting at a table by the window and just look out to the lake.  At times I’ll pull out my journal or notebook and make notes of what I see and what comes to mind.  Over the years I’ve written quite a few pieces about the VFW view of Lake Jackson.
Enjoy today’s piece

Sun glints off the waves
Like diamonds that roll across the water
Sitting at a table at the VFW
Looking out the window I watch the action
    on Lake Jackson
A few on jet skis whiz by the VFW dock
Further out I notice pontoon boats
making their way slowly across the lake
One stops at the jetty
     Four passengers disembark
They head towards the door to enter
             the establishment
Pondering their intent, I sip my Brass
        Monkey
Are they souls needing to quench their thirst on this hot humid April afternoon?
Maybe they want to cool off inside the air conditioned building for awhile
Or are they meeting friends?
Continuing my vigil of peering out into the world
I notice how the flag flutters in the breeze
as if waving to those on Lake Jackson
a red, white and blue welcome to those
docking their crafts at the VFW on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in April

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 15

It’s tax due day and one of the wacky holidays today is ‘It Sucks Day’.  I thought they were the same thing.  Oh well.  There are some who wait till the last moment (like today) to get there taxes done.  Me, I sent mine Saturday.  Had it done on Thursday. I decided today is a good day for this piece.
I ended up writing this when a friend was having a bad day and needed cheering up.
It worked as it gave her a good chuckle.
Hope everyone enjoys the day.

As part of the challenge in 2012 I realized the evening of Day 14 I had not worked on my daily challenge of a poem a day.  I was at a karaoke when I realized this.  As I always carry a notebook with me I pulled it out and began to write.  This came to me after my disaster at singing a song. I called it “Lessons Learned” as I did learn a few things that night.  Make sure if I take the challenge to compose a verse a day I get it done and secondly don’t try to sing a song that does not suit your voice.
So far it’s been an uphill battle to get my 2019 challenge done each day but I’ll do it.
Until tomorrow...enjoy your day

I sat in the bar on karaoke night
and did not write my poem if the day
Listen to wannabe Loretta Lynn’s and
      Sinatra’s
    while drinking the night away
My named got called by the DJ
went to the stage to sing my song
Halfway through I realized for my
   voice....the arrangement was all wrong
Could not hit the high notes,
should have sung in a lower key
After my three minutes of fame.
no applause but a round of raspberries
I will never be a singer and now I sure
    do know it
Instead I’ll sit in the bar, write in my journal
   and become an unknown poet
