NATIONAL POETRY MONTH....Day 5

Day five in 2018 was on a Thursday.  I was on my way home from the laundromat as I recall when I came around the slight curve in the road (I was driving around a lake).  There were four Sandhill cranes walking towards the lake.  Two were adult size the other two smaller.  They just took their time crossing and they seemed to look both ways before doing so. I sat for perhaps two minutes but it did seem longer.  I enjoy watching these birds who like pedestrians have the right of way.  I was in no hurry but I could see the person in the car behind me.  He had a scowl on his face.  He should know that these birds are around the lake and you never know where you’ll encounter them.  After I arrived home I hurried to get down my thoughts on the situation.  I began to compose this in my mind as I made the five minute drive from where I sat in my car. I’ve written other pieces with sand cranes as a theme.  As I read Day 5 of 2013 I find that I mentioned sand cranes in that piece also.  Odd second time I’ve written about same subject or mentioned same subject in the same days pieces but years apart.  Now I wonder how many more coincidences I’ll find as I re-read my own poems this month. As I have not started working on Day 5 challenge for this year I do know I will not include sand cranes in the piece.
Until tomorrow.....enjoy the day.

I hit the brakes.....I stop along the
        lake road
Cars in the opposite lane
suddenly come to a stand still
We sit in our vehicles....peer out
      our windows
 Slowly sauntering across the
      road
No cares do they seem to have
While looking at us sitting in our
         automobiles
Their spindly legs carry them to
the other side of the street
Strolling to the lake for an afternoon adventure
A father, mother and two little siblings
 The Sand Crane family

Looking out at Lake Jackson
       a gray misty cloud hovers
          overhead
    giving the lake an eerie
          appearance
    Late morning....dismal as I look
           out the window
waiting for the sun to appear to
       warm the earth
The sand cranes keep a low profile
         at the moment
They wait for sunny skies to walk
         the shoreline
to entertain those who watch them
     from the VFW
