As I’ve mentioned before during National Poetry Month quite a few of my poems come from actual events that have occurred. A few years ago I composed this about supporting a white elephant table at a veteran’s club. The monies from the table is donated to a cancer hospital for research.
I do remember thinking I’d not check out the table that day as two days prior I’d been at the club, checked out the table and saw nothing of interest. After arriving there my husband had gone to look at what was there. He came back and told me I should go look at it as new items had been added. He said “i hope you have money in your pocket as I’m sure you’re going to buy what’s there”. I did as he suggested and found a treasure. It was a doll that I had been looking around for at the stores. It wasn’t just any doll but one made of cloth and twenty to twenty inches high. Yes I hit the jackpot. Twenty-two years prior I purchased an almost identical doll from a co-worker who had a flea market table. She had about ten of these dolls and sold them for five dollars (brand new). Over the years I noticed them on occasion in stores for triple the cost. The five dollar doll given to the first granddaughter who named her Lovey Dovey. She carried the doll everywhere; used it as a pillow and would not go to sleep without it. She has the doll after all these years. Another granddaughter came into the family in 2004. I tried to find a doll like this one but no avail. Seeing the doll on the white elephant table in pristine condition and with the original price tag seemed like an omen. I purchased it. I don’t think the new granddaughter is as enthralled with the doll as her older cousin had been. After all twenty-two years toys change; what one girl liked another may have a different item that is special.
Enjoy your day.

Inspecting items on the 'white elephant' table
It attracts my attention.....an item twenty inches high
A cloth doll with dark brown braids
Decked out in a pink flowery dress
Original price tag still hanging off her arm letting the world know the selling cost at one time
Small yellow sticker attached to the left leg lists two dollars
Checking over the doll for any signs of tears, marks, wear
None I see.....she is in pristine condition
A bargain....to say the least
Dolly will make a little girl smile
Reaching into the pocket of my camouflage shorts I find two one dollar bills
Placing the money in the donation box
I reach for the treasure.....
Lovey Dovey the Second it will be known as.....named after another doll given to a young girl
twenty-two years ago
