I’ve heard the word for the day before, COMEUPPANCE, but don’t think I ever used it. It’s one of those words that some just don’t say anymore. The idea of using it came simple. I had twenty minutes to write a flash fiction using it. What I did was recall a few things I had been reading in my current novel about cheating in marriage and this flash fiction wrote itself. It was indeed a fun piece to write. I pictured it all in my head as the words appeared. After I had the basic thoughts down I read it to my husband who then timed me ten minutes to rearrange words for final product. The first piece goes hand in hand with the story; you can call it a prelude of sorts.
The other night I could not fall asleep. I thought about funny stuff such as titles of books or products. Years ago my first husband was a fan of the satirical “MAD” magazine. In one issue they listed a series of funny products; one being a cat litter called POUR and POOP. Well a friend of my first husband was purchasing stuff for his girlfriend and asked what type of cat litter would be best. My husband told him POUR and POOP was the best on the market. Yes, the guy asked someone at the store for this brand. Now it won’t be funny if the store employee didn’t try to go back in the stock room to find that brand. It seemed the store employee was new and tells the guy they were out of that brand. Neither of these two figured it to be a joke. Think about it though what an interesting name indeed.

REAL LIFE DINNER THEATER
Amy sat at the table watching the scene around her; a three act play was unfolding.
This production though were not actors playing out scripted scenes on a stage or in dinner theater but a real life drama. There’d be no intermission to distract Amy. She picked up her glass of wine, sipping the delicious merlot she never removed her eyes from the events before her. Act One had started when the couple entered the restaurant; now Act Two began. There she sat, the other woman; or the one who had been the other woman now her
ex-husband’s fiancé. The woman was dining with another man; such a touching scene. The two held hands and stared lovingly into one another’s eyes. They were so engrossed, they did not notice anyone or anything around them in the crowded restaurant.
This was not the first time Amy encountered the fiancé and this man but the fourth or was it the fifth. Amy lost count; but always on a Wednesday evening at Dominics Place. It was a coincidence the first time as Amy had stopped to meet a friend for dinner that she noticed the couple. Dominics Place was not one of Alex’s regular haunts, perhaps the reason why the cheating fiancé picked it for her rendezvous. A few weeks later, Amy once again stopped at Dominics Place to dine. Again, she noticed the couple; the day was Wednesday. She learned from a friendly server the couple were regular Wednesday night patrons. Wednesday night was when Alex played darts with his buddies after work. First they’d have dinner somewhere. Well this Wednesday there’d be no dart game and possibly no dinner. She made sure of that. It cost her fifty dollars to get him to come to Dominics Place. A gift certificate he supposedly won for a free meal, good only on a Wednesday, was sent to him at his office. Alex never passed up anything free if he could help it. She was certain he’d be stopping by with his friends. Yes he’d be getting his just desserts tonight and not a gelato. This would serve him right for how he cheated on Amy during their marriage. Retribution for what he put her through. Amy took another sip of the wine as she waited patiently for the finale of the evening entertainment; the curtain coming down on her ex-husband. She smiled as she noticed the four men being shown to a table; Alex and his three buddies finally arrived. She could hardly contain her excitement as she saw the horrid expression on Alex’s face and the shocking look on the face of the fiancé. His voice carried through the restaurant as he began to shout at the woman. His three friends held him back as he approached the man sitting across the table from the fiancé. Amy watched with pleasure while others in the restaurant sat with looks of disdain at having their meal interrupted.
Amy motioned for her server.
“I’ll have that bottle of champagne now”, she said.
“What are you celebrating”, the server inquired; she was surprised someone would be drinking champagne alone.
With a satisfying look upon her face Amy replied “I’m celebrating comeuppance; a long awaited due reward.”
